Spello (population 8,000) rests on a vast crag on the Spelloextreme southern slope of Mount Subasio overlooking the Tiber valley. From a distance, its stone walls, gates, towers and houses step gracefully down the mountainside in pyramid formation. Under the Romans, Spello was the "centre of the world", equidistant from north Africa and north Europe, and from Spain and the near East.
